COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is composed of 5 units, each one contains pre-recorded sessions that have been made available via our website. The duration of each video/session depends on the subject at hand. The total timeframe to complete the course is 1 month, at which time, the final training exam will be delivered. Participants must watch all of the pre-recorded sessions, and must approve or pass all quizzes and exams with a minimum of 80% within the 1-month period, in order to be eligible to take the Final Credentialing Exam. We will assist participants with live Q&A sessions upon request, via online platform. Live meetings will be scheduled using USA central standard time (CST) as a reference. These sessions will also be recorded and made available for any participant who was not able to attend the live session.

ELEGIBILITY

To be eligible for this course you must:

  • Be an O.R. or Scrub Nurse, or work within the Sterilization Department.
  • Be an active local Operation Smile Volunteer.
  • Be familiarized with surgical instruments.
  • Be willing to further your knowledge in surgical instruments.
  • Be eager to improve your performance in daily tasks and routines in regards to surgical instruments.
  • Have the desire to innovate your hospital’s protocols and procedures in regards to handling, cleaning, maintaining and storing surgical instruments.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE EXPECTED UPON COMPLETION OF COURSE

In order to be eligible for credentialing as a Surgical Instrument Technician, participant must be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of precision instrument manufacture, care and identification of surgical instruments.
  • Develop or improve local hospital guidelines on decontamination, packaging, sterilization and infection control procedures.
  • Develop or improve local hospital guidelines for assembling Magee set and Soft tissue set.
  • Determine local hospital necessity to refer troubleshooting to Global Maintenance Program of Operation Smile Inc.

EVALUATIONS

  • At the completion of each session, participants must take the 5-minute quiz on the subject at hand. Additionally, at the end of each unit, participant will be required to take a Unit Test.
  • The Subject and Unit tests will be scored automatically, and results will be made available immediately.
  • To be able to pass each unit, participants must obtain a minimum of 80% of correct answers.
  • Upon completion of the entire Surgical Instrument Training and Credentialing Course, each participant must take the Credentialing Test, which will also be graded automatically, and results made available immediately.
  • In order to pass the Credentialing Test, participant must obtain a minimum of 80% of correct answers.
  • Once the Credentialing Test has been taken, and if participant has approved the course, a printable Diploma will be made available.
